Destination Overview

Mombasa City is the capital of Mombasa County and is the second largest city in Kenya. Swahili and English are spoken by the 939,000 hospitable residents.

It is located in the Eastern coastline of Kenya which made it a popular destination spot for beaches teeming with marine life and world-class hotels. Water activities await beach lovers. Scuba dive and feast your eyes on the stunning seascape. Or just enjoy blasé moments by the shore surrounded by tropical vegetation.

Travel around the city using a local mode of transport like matatu, 14-seat mini-bus, and tuk-tuk, 3-wheel taxi. There are a number of sites to visit to make your stay more memorable, some of these are:

  • Haller Park. The park boasts of a reptile estate, fish farm, palm garden, wildlife sanctuary, and a crocodile coop. Have an up-close encounter with creatures of the wild made more exciting with a forest as the backdrop.

  • Fort Jesus Museum. Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Displays artefacts dating back to days when Mombasa was a transit point of the slave trade.

  • Old Town. A historic district which was converted into souvenir shops and eateries. Best to visit on Sundays when most of the city is closed.

  • Mombasa Tusks. Located at the entrance of the city that was built in 1956 to commemorate the visit of Prince Margaret. It is not made of ivory but aluminium.

  • Bamburi beach. On a sunny day the place looks startling with very clear water swarming with marine life. A lot of water activities await beach enthusiasts.

Are you hungry? Mombasa offers exquisite dishes of diverse cultures such as Swahili, Indian, Korean, Chinese, and Italian. A plethora of restaurants and eateries await the most delicate palate including fresh catch from the sea,

The city is an economic hub and home to the largest seaport in Kenya, Kilindini Harbour, and an international airport. The economy thrives from other businesses like tourism, oil refinery, cement production, and call centre.

Medical students will have first-hand experience treating patient’s ailments with GEP’s partner hospital, Coast Province General Hospital (CPGH). A government hospital that was established in 1908, it has a 700-bed capacity with 10 general wards, 3 maternity wards and 1 amenity ward.

The inpatient and outpatient medical care provided by the hospital are: immunizations, dressing, physiotherapy, MCH/F/D, pharmacy, laboratory services, orthopedic plaster and occupational therapy. There are specialized monthly programs for maxillofacial surgery missions, neurosurgery and pediatric surgery.

CPGH acts a referral and teaching hospital and covers 7 coastal districts with a population of 6 million. Based on medical records the hospital has yearly rate of inpatient admission of 32,000 and an outpatient visits of 200,000. A good thing for the community.

There are numerous community projects from various organizations partnered with the hospital like the breastfeeding program of UNICEF and the University of Ghent’s research program on mother to child HIV/AIDS transmission.

Foreign students should expect a clinical rotation in the departments of paediatrics, general medicine, emergency, obstetrics and gynecology.

Had an unforgettable experience with GEP family in the Philippines on our dental elective, would definitely recommend for any students looking to experience hands-on work in the area and the hospitality we had as a group of 4 students was amazing, thank you!

Had the best time with Global Elective Port on our ventures in the Philippines. We were provided with not only excellent dental experience but also many fun activities. April and the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us and make us feel welcome throughout our stay. Couldn’t recommend dental and medical students to join the programme highly enough.
